Fixtures Brighton and Hove Albion U21 Vs. Aston Villa U21 - Fri, Apr 3rd 2026, 19:00 Aston Villa returned to Premier League 2 action on Good Friday, playing out a goalless draw away at Brighton & Hove Albion. In an intriguing encounter at The American Express Elite Football Performance Centre, it was the hosts who controlled the bulk of the opening period, with Jimmy Shan’s Young Lions looking the more likely to take all three points after the break. But both sides ended up cancelling one another out on the south coast, taking a point apiece as Villa climbed to 16th in the league standings, despite a late red card for Leon Routh. With the Villans now back from international duty, Shan had the luxury of naming a strong side for the trip to the seaside, and it was the visitors who started the better in the opening few minutes, controlling the ball and keeping their shape and structure well. But it did not take the hosts long to wrestle the initiative, and begin applying pressure on the Villa goal as they sought the opener. Nine minutes were on the clock when Josh Robertson let fly with a well-struck effort from range, but James Wright in the Villa goal was well behind it to beat away, before needing to be alert again minutes later to claw away an effort at his near post, from a tight angle. The Young Lions were showing flashes of their attacking potential looking threatening on the counter-attack, with the lively Luka Lynch testing the Brighton backline and drawing several fouls in the home half of the field. But it was the hosts who were looking the more likely to open the scoring, and might have enjoyed greater fortunes just after the half-hour, when Villa could only partially clear a corner, allowing captain Charlie Tasker to send a fierce effort goalwards, only to see it hit his own player, Joe Belmont, and deflect over for a goal-kick. Straight up at the other end, it was the visitors’ turn to go close and create an opening, when a free-kick was sent to the back post, but Mason Cotcher proved unable to direct his glancing header on target, as a goalless opening period drew to a close. Brighton immediately picked up where they left off before the break as the second half got underway, and within two minutes of the restart, Nehemiah Oriola had driven at the Villa defence and fired wide of the far post from an angle. But that would not be a sign of things to come, however, with the Villans controlling the vast majority of the second 45, going close minutes later when George Hemmings dragged a volley wide from the edge of the area. The visitors were pressing more aggressively and now dominating the midfield battle, playing much of their football inside their hosts’ half and enjoying more openings as they looked to break the deadlock. Just before the hour mark, Lynch bent an effort over, before going even closer 10 minutes later from a direct free-kick. After Mohamed Koné had burst through the middle and been brought down, the winger stepped up and looked for the bottom corner, only for goalkeeper Steven Hall to tip around his post, before clawing Routh’s cross out from the resulting set-piece. It remained anyone’s game as the final 10 minutes approached, Brighton’s Tyler Silsby cutting inside onto his right foot but bending comfortably wide of the far post, with the affair very much hanging in the balance. And, despite Routh being shown a straight red card in stoppage time to see Villa reduced to 10, Shan’s players held out to put a point on the board, ahead of their Easter Monday trip to Lancashire to take on Blackburn Rovers (ko 5pm).
